How Your Montreal to Ottawa Move Works with DMAX
Step 1: Online Estimate
Everything starts online. Fill out our form with your volume to move (number of rooms, types of furniture, heavy items) and receive an accurate estimate with no obligation. What you see in your written quote is what we commit to. If anything changes on moving day (harder access than expected, heavier items), we tell you before we act, never after.
Step 2: Planning
Once you accept the estimate, we confirm the date and time of your move. We call you to coordinate the details: access at your starting address (elevator, stairs, narrow doorways?), exact address in Ottawa, parking rules, and anything else that could affect the day.
Step 3: Loading in Montreal
On moving day, our team arrives at the agreed time. We protect your furniture with padded blankets and bubble wrap. Fragile items (dishes, frames, electronics) are packed with care. We install floor protection to avoid damaging your floor. Each piece is loaded methodically into our 20 to 30 foot truck, then strapped down securely to prevent any movement during transport.
Step 4: Interprovincial Transport to Ottawa
Your truck heads to Ottawa. It is a direct trip, no transfer to another vehicle, no stop at a warehouse. If you have questions during transport, you can reach us by phone.
Step 5: Delivery in Ottawa
When we arrive in Ottawa, our team unloads your furniture and places it in the rooms you indicate. We unpack the fragile items and check for any damage. If you have furniture to reassemble (bed, desk, shelves), we handle it. We remove all the protection and confirm everything is in order before we leave.

What to Prepare Before Your Montreal to Ottawa Move
1. Confirm the delivery address and building access in Ottawa
Ottawa address is locked in. Check the access: is there an elevator? Stairs? Narrow doorways? Can you access the parking lot or service entrance? Share these details with DMAX during planning. If you rent an apartment or office, confirm with the owner or building manager that the move is authorized on the chosen date.
2. Check Ottawa parking rules
Some Ottawa neighbourhoods require a temporary parking permit for moving trucks. Check with your municipality or your building manager. If a permit is required, get it before moving day. We can help you understand the steps, but obtaining it is your responsibility.
3. Pack your boxes and label by room
Start packing a few weeks before the move. Use standard-sized boxes, neither too large nor too small. Label each box with the destination room number (kitchen, bedroom 1, living room, etc.). It makes unloading much faster in Ottawa. Need supplies? You will find everything you need (boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape) in our online shop.4. Disassemble bulky furniture in advance
Beds, desks, shelves, and dining tables take less space when disassembled. Take them apart before moving day and keep the screws and bolts in a labelled bag. Our team can also disassemble on site, but it takes time and increases the cost.
5. Plan service activation when you arrive in Ottawa
Before moving, confirm the activation date of your services in Ottawa: electricity, gas, internet, phone. You do not want to arrive in an apartment without power or internet. Contact your providers at least 2 weeks before your move.
6. In winter: shovel and de-ice the access
If you move between November and March, make sure the access at both addresses is clear. Shovel the driveway, sidewalk, and entrance. De-ice the steps. It makes our work safer and faster.
What You Need to Know About a Montreal to Ottawa Move
Quebec-Ontario Interprovincial Crossing
Contrary to what some people think, there are no customs formalities for moving from Quebec to Ontario (or from Gatineau across the river to Ottawa). It is an interprovincial move, not an international one. However, DMAX must hold the interprovincial transport permits required by Canadian transport authorities. That is the case: we have been authorized to operate in Quebec and Ontario since 2006.
Main Route and Traffic Conditions
The Montreal to Ottawa route primarily uses Highway 417 on the Ontario side. This highway is well maintained, but it can be congested during rush hours (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM on weekdays). We plan our moves to avoid these periods when possible.
Parking in Ottawa
Parking rules in Ottawa differ from those in Montreal. If the truck can respect the standard parking regulations, no permit is required. Otherwise, for example on a narrow street, in the downtown core, or when an obstruction is needed, a Temporary Encroachment Permit must be obtained from the City.Processing requires at least 2 business days, but we recommend applying at least one week in advance to avoid surprises. We suggest checking with the City of Ottawa (3-1-1, or 613-580-2400 from outside) or your building manager as soon as you book your move. If a permit is required, obtaining it is your responsibility, but we can help you navigate the process.
